Badab-e Surt - Mazandaran

Badab-e Surt

There may be only a few people who have never heard of the beauties of Badab-e Surt. A dreamy area with fabulous colorful springs especially in May! This spring was registered by Iran’s Cultural Heritage Organization as the second natural heritage of Iran (after Mount Damavand) in 2008.

The beautiful and spectacular Badab-e Surt, which is one of the most fascinating masterpieces of nature and recognized as the most beautiful spring in the world, is located in Sari, Mazandaran Province. These springs are located at the height of 1840 meters and are unique in Iran. Springs like Badab-e Surt are also found in Turkey, the US and New Zealand.

Badab-e Surt means the effect intensity of the sparkling water effect that is locally called Eroust Wao or Badu. Its brand name is “the fountains of the Golden Palace of Eroust”.

This beautiful and magical place extends from the north to highlands and hills covered with coniferous forests, from the south to downstream valleys and from the east to shrubs and the west are also surrounded by the village of Eroust.

The mysterious fountains of Badab-e Surt consist of two springs with completely different waters in terms of color and taste. One of these springs has very salty water and has a small lake that is mainly used for swimming in the summer and is useful for the treatment of back pain and rheumatoid arthritis and especially migraine headaches. There is a deep hole in the lake called the Eroust Bermuda. Also, this spring does not freeze in winter due to the salinity. The other permanent spring has orange-colored water with a slightly sour taste and around the spring there is a little iron oxide sediment, known as the elixir of life.

For thousands of years sedimentary waters of these two springs have created tons of beautiful small pools of orange, yellow, red, and gold in various sizes in a naturally formed staircase along their way from the top of the mountain to downstream lands which represents the amazing features of wonderful pristine nature. The Badab-e Surt is a geopark type and coincides with the last Mount Alborz fold in the Pleistocene and Pliocene (Fourth Geological Age). Of course, this spring is still very young because if you cross this spring hundreds of meters to the north, you will reach the old Badab-e Surt in foothills, which have been dry for hundreds of years, but its beautiful traces has still remained as if it were still a boiling spring with no doubt was one of the wonders of the world. There is also another spring called the small Badab-e Surt or Shoursar. This spring is very small in size and is located in the village of Eroust and has excellent medical properties compared to other fountains.
